Last week, more than sixty health and nutrition organisations across eighteen countries signed something called the Lisbon Manifesto — a formal request asking the World Health Organization, the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization, and the Pan American Health Organisation to recognise olive oil, specifically the high-polyphenol kind, as a functional food in its own right. Not a seasoning. Not a cooking fat. A food with a measurable role in long-term health, deserving its own line in national dietary guidance.
It is a quiet piece of news, reported first by the Cyprus Mail, and it says something we have believed since Oliiv began: the gap was never in the science. It was in how seriously the world was willing to take it.
The evidence has been accumulating for decades
The case the Manifesto leans on is not new, but it is substantial. The PREDIMED trial, which followed 7,447 people at high cardiovascular risk, found 31% fewer heart attacks, strokes and cardiovascular deaths among those given extra virgin olive oil compared with a low-fat control diet. The EUROLIVE study went further, giving 200 volunteers oils that were chemically identical except for polyphenol content — and found that HDL cholesterol rose, and oxidative damage fell, in direct proportion to those polyphenols alone.
Then there is the research closer to home for anyone thinking about longevity rather than just heart health. Researchers at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health tracked more than 92,000 American adults for 28 years and found that those consuming at least seven grams of olive oil daily — roughly half a tablespoon — had a 28% lower risk of dying from dementia, regardless of genetic risk or the quality of the rest of their diet. It is one of the longer-running pieces of nutrition evidence we have.
Europe has already taken one step in this direction. In 2012, under EU Regulation 432/2012, EFSA approved a health claim for olive oil polyphenols protecting blood lipids from oxidative stress — but only at a specific threshold: 5mg of hydroxytyrosol and its derivatives per 20ml of oil, taken daily. That detail matters more than it sounds. It means the benefit is not a property of "olive oil" as a category. It is a property of how much polyphenol is actually in the bottle.
Why the amount in the bottle is the whole story
This is where the science gets honest, and we think honesty is worth more than hype. The British Heart Foundation is right to caution that olive oil is not a supplement and drinking it by the spoonful is not, on its own, a shortcut to better health — benefits are linked to it being part of a consistently balanced diet, not treated as medicine. We agree. Nothing about a daily ritual replaces eating well.
But within that honest framing, polyphenol content is not a rounding error. It is the mechanism. And polyphenol content is almost entirely decided before the oil ever reaches a bottle: the olive variety, how early in the season it was picked, how quickly it was pressed, and how it was stored. Oils picked early, from olives still showing green, and milled within hours rather than days, can carry many times the polyphenol concentration of oil pressed from fruit left to over-ripen in a warehouse. The Manifesto's call for standardised polyphenol labelling exists precisely because, right now, two bottles labelled "extra virgin" can differ enormously in what they actually deliver.
This is the quiet argument for provenance. A harvest date on a label is not decoration. It is the clearest signal available of how much of that protective chemistry survived the journey from grove to bottle.
A ritual, not a headline
Every Oliiv bottle carries its harvest date for this reason. Our oil comes from single-estate, regeneratively farmed groves, picked early and cold-pressed within hours — not because it reads well, but because it is the only way to protect the polyphenol content the research keeps pointing back to. A spoonful each morning is a small, consistent act rather than a one-off claim, which is, if the Harvard data is any guide, closer to how these benefits actually accrue: not from a single dose, but from twenty-eight years of ordinary mornings.
The Lisbon Manifesto may or may not move WHO policy. But it is a useful reminder that the ritual many of our customers already practise — one spoonful, each morning, from oil they trust the origin of — was never a trend to catch up to. It was simply ahead of the paperwork.
